I know that it has been radio silence over the past few months.  I have been busy moving!  And this time, not myself.  So I have had plenty to do, and not enough time to write about it!

Some time ago, my little sister D, my best friend and flatmate, decided that enough was enough and she was moving out into her own apartment.  I was in favour of this move but whilst celebrating the principle of the move – it’s time, it’s the logical next step etc etc..  I was also absolutely dreading it. The other day, I was walking down the High Street near where I live, when I spotted a lady that I know sitting outside a café.  I could have crossed the road and left it, but I could hear generations of female family members collectively saying ‘Don’t you dare be so rude’ in my head, so I approached her to say hello. Wherever I am, whatever the distance I have to travel when I leave somewhere, I always go to the bathroom before I go.  There is no scenario where I think – it’s only a few minutes – what could possibly go wrong?  Firstly because thinking that is practically inviting something to go wrong, and secondly because I channel my namesake grandmother in many things, but this one apparently first and foremost.  Read the rest of this entry »

I got a new computer thingy!  Hurray!  Time for my first blog post on it…

This summer, around the time of my birthday, I was in Athens.  I had emailed R, D’s boyfriend (and my unofficial tech support guy) to ask him for advice about buying a mini laptop.  I know these things have a proper technical name like notebook, or netbook or whatever, but I use the words that I know, and this here is a mini laptop. Back in mid – July (which now seems like a lifetime ago), I went to Greece for a holiday.  Having made the decision to go, I also paid the extra however much it is to check in an extra suitcase.  Firstly because I always have a suitcase full of stuff for other people, and secondly because this time I was going for almost three weeks which means I also needed to take stuff for myself.  I had already taken a suitcase full in June when I went on a flying visit, but there is always plenty of stuff to take, and paying the extra £25 is cheaper than overweight at the airport, or sending stuff over. On Monday evening, D and I set off to our yoga class.  Those moments as we drive to where the class is are always bittersweet – the feel-good factor that we are about to do something healthy and positive, combined with the (sometimes quite strong) feeling of dread and anticipated discomfort.  Read the rest of this entry »

The other day I went into Lush to buy a tub of body scrub. I may have mentioned this before, but Lush (and other stores of its type) have this effect on me that I don’t enjoy at all. They make me lightheaded and dizzy with all of the different perfumes and scents in the atmosphere.  Sometimes, even passing by the store makes me reach for my inhaler.  However, I needed something, so I braved it.  I specifically knew what I was going in for, so I took a deep breath and went in, releasing small amounts of breath slowly as I searched for the product I was after.  Two breaths later, product in hand, I approached the counter. So it’s the same every year, we start to talk about Christmas and all of the things that need to be done in advance.  We were going to be 19 for Christmas lunch this year, and as a result, I had to rearrange the house. Furniture had to be taken apart and then put back together again.  Chairs had to be procured.  Crockery and cutlery had to be sourced, and some items of furniture had to be relocated.  Everything that had to be relocated ended up in my room, which made moving around in the dark an exciting and sometimes painful experience.  Read the rest of this entry »
