The other day I went into Lush to buy a tub of body scrub. I may have mentioned this before, but Lush (and other stores of its type) have this effect on me that I don’t enjoy at all. They make me lightheaded and dizzy with all of the different perfumes and scents in the atmosphere.  Sometimes, even passing by the store makes me reach for my inhaler.  However, I needed something, so I braved it.  I specifically knew what I was going in for, so I took a deep breath and went in, releasing small amounts of breath slowly as I searched for the product I was after.  Two breaths later, product in hand, I approached the counter. After many years of resisting and getting flak from friends, family and strangers alike, I finally made the enormously difficult decision to buy a smartphone.   I actually came to the decision after sitting in a restaurant for half an hour waiting for a friend, who had emailed me 35 minutes previously saying that he was there but in the back.  Imagine how stupid we both felt when he got up to leave thinking he had been stood up, and walked past me on his way out.  Read the rest of this entry »

So it’s the same every year, we start to talk about Christmas and all of the things that need to be done in advance.  We were going to be 19 for Christmas lunch this year, and as a result, I had to rearrange the house. Furniture had to be taken apart and then put back together again.  Chairs had to be procured.  Crockery and cutlery had to be sourced, and some items of furniture had to be relocated.  Everything that had to be relocated ended up in my room, which made moving around in the dark an exciting and sometimes painful experience.  Read the rest of this entry »

It’s true, I admit it, towards the end of 2014 I fell off the writing wagon.  It’s not that I didn’t have anything to write about, it’s just that I stopped having the (or rather – making the) time to write.  I know you aren’t all out there waiting with bated breath, but I feel like I let myself down.  Still though that was last year.  This year will be different, I can feel it. After losing my bank card at the airport on the way to Athens, I wondered if the trip back would be less stressful.  Certainly, travelling alone would suggest that it could be, but then again, I had been alone on the way there and had gotten cheesed off with a billboard, so perhaps I need a travelling companion to keep me calm.  Lucky I do all that yoga to keep me zen… Read the rest of this entry »

Recently I flew to Athens from Heathrow Airport.  Having looked at all the available options, I chose to take the evening flight to Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, which leaves at 22:15 and arrives in Athens at 04:00.  I chose this HUGELY inconvenient flight as I needed to be in Athens on the following morning, and the flight that leaves 6 hours earlier was £400 more expensive.  Read the rest of this entry »

I mentioned in my last post that I enjoy a busy weekend, and I thought I would share one from August with you. Another friend, R, had a BBQ and we had the same angst about the weather. Once again, the weather held out and even though we weren’t as warm as 3 weeks ago, we were still able to enjoy the outdoors and (most importantly) the meat. The highlight of this BBQ was 10 hour cooked pulled pork shoulder. If I figure out how to attach a video, I will – this pork shoulder was moist, tender, delicious and devoured ravenously by myself and R’s other guests. (Just managed to link it, for the video click where it says cooked pulled pork shoulder.  Not suitable for vegetarians) Read the rest of this entry »

On this, the occasion of my 100th post, I thought I would tell you about last weekend which was a weekend of firsts for me.  I flew back from Athens on the Friday, with my sister and her two daughters.  Could I just say that although I love them both unreservedly and they were fantastically well-behaved, travelling with children is extraordinarily stressful.  Read the rest of this entry »

Presents, gifts call them what you like, they are a highlight in life.  There is no such thing as a dud gift.  Actually that’s a lie.  There is such a thing, but there is no polite or correct way of saying so. Every so often you receive a gift that is so lame, so inappropriate, that it feels like you can’t express your feelings on the matter. And, if I’m honest, you probably shouldn’t.  Smile and say thank you is the motto of the day when you are opening presents.   Read the rest of this entry »

Let’s be honest, Marilyin was uniquely able to pull this off.

As summer is here, I find that I am trying to find more ways of being scantily clad and yet still decent.  Clothes just seem too close to my body, too warm, too clothey, just too much.  I do not own any floaty dresses for several reasons, the main one being that a floaty dress is quite simply a way of appearing naked at intervals during the day.
